China, dated 1850
25,5 x 263,5 cm (Malerei)
Flowers and Vegetables of the Four Seasons. Ink and colors on gold speckled paper, mounted as handscroll. Signature of the artist at the end of the scroll: “In mid winter in the gengxu year (1850) painted at the south window of the ‘Studio of Washing Stones’ (Soushiju), Guanfu Xia Jin, at the age of sixteen”. Two seals of the artist: “Guanfu”, “Xia Jin”. Frontispice with dedication title in clerical script: “Colors with Scent and Taste. Title written for Mister Yousan, by Zhang Yinyong”. One seal: “Haimen Zhang Yinyong zhi zhang”. At the beginning of the scroll a dedication is written: “At the Duanwu festival in the xinhai year (1851) given as a present to my friend Hefeng for appreciation, Lanyu”. One seal: “Gushui Lanyu”. The same Lanyu wrote a note in front of the signature at the end of the scroll: “Tao Zhui’an (Tao Qi, 1814-1865) has painted a handscroll with vegetables. Guanfu copied it and further added flowers just fitting in the same style. … Gushui Lanyu”. One seal.
From an old southern German private collection, acquired between 1970 and 2002
After the painting twenty eight colophons were added on the colophon paper, the first by Zhang Jinyong, dated the ninth year of Xianfeng (1859), the last one dated “nearly one hundred years later”, jiazi year (1924). Most colophons dedicate the painting to Mister Yousan. So it seems to have been perhaps a birthday present for him in 1859.
Minor wear, traces of age
